United States Colored Troops Artillery

 

1st Regiment Heavy Artillery

Organized at Knoxville, Tenn., February 20, 1864. Attached to 2nd Brigade, 4th Division, 23rd Corps, Dept. of Ohio, to February, 1865. 2nd Brigade, 4th Division, District of East Tennessee, Dept. of the Cumberland, to March, 1865. 1st Brigade, 4th Division, District of East Tennessee, to March. 1866.

SERVICE.--Duty at Knoxville, Tenn., until January, 1865. Operations against Wheeler in East Tennessee August 15-25, 1864. Operations in Northern Alabama and East Tennessee January 31-April 24, 1865. Stoneman's operations from East Tennessee into Southwestern Virginia and Western North Carolina February to April. At Greenville and in District of East Tennessee until March, 1866. Mustered out March 31, 1866.

3rd Regiment Heavy Artillery

Organized from 1st Tennessee Heavy Artillery (African Descent). Designated 2nd United States Colored Heavy Artillery March 11, 1864, and 3rd Heavy Artillery April 26, 1864. Attached to District of Memphis, Tenn., Dept. of Tennessee, to June, 1864. Memphis, Tenn., District of West Tennessee, to July, 1865. 2nd Infantry Brigade, District of West Tennessee, to September, 1865. District of West Tennessee to April, 1866.

SERVICE.--Served as garrison at Fort Pickering, and in Defenses of Memphis, Tenn., and in District of West Tennessee until April, 1866. Mustered out April 30, 1866.

4th Regiment Heavy Artillery

Organized from 2nd Tennessee Heavy Artillery (African Descent). Designated 3rd Heavy Artillery March 11, 1864, and 4th Heavy Artillery April 26, 1864. Attached to District of Columbus. 16th Corps, Dept. of Tennessee, to August, 1864. District of Columbus, Dept. of Ohio, to June, 1865. Dept. of Arkansas to February, 1866.

SERVICE.--Garrison duty at Fort Halleck, Columbus, Ky., until June, 1865. Union City, Tenn., September 2, 1864. Near Fort Donelson. Tenn., October 11. Moved to Arkansas June, 1865, and duty at Pine Bluff, Ark., until February, 1866. Mustered out February 25, 1866.

5th Regiment Heavy Artillery

Organized from 1st Mississippi Heavy Artillery (African Descent). Designated 4th Heavy Artillery March 11, 1864, and 5th Heavy Artillery April 26, 1864. Attached to 1st Division, United States Colored Troops, District of Vicksburg, Miss., to February, 1865. Unattached, Post of Vicksburg, Dept. of Mississippi, and Dept. of the Gulf to May, 1864.

SERVICE.--Garrison duty at Vicksburg, Miss., until May, 1866. Expedition from Vicksburg to Rodney and Fayette September 29-October 3, 1864. Expedition from Vicksburg to Yazoo City November 23-December 4, 1864. Mustered out May 20, 1866.

Lost during service 4 Officers and 124 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 697 Enlisted men by disease. Total 829.

6th Regiment Heavy Artillery

Organized from 2nd Mississippi Heavy Artillery (African Descent). Designated 5th Heavy Artillery March 11, 1864, and 6th Heavy Artillery April 26, 1864. Attached to Post of Natchez, Miss., District of Vicksburg, Miss., Dept. of Tennessee, and Dept. of Mississippi to February, 1865. Post of Natchez, Dept. of Mississippi, to April, 1865. Dept. of the Gulf to May, 1866.

SERVICE.--Duty at Natchez, Miss., and Vidalia, La., until May, 1866. Skirmish near Vidalia, La., July 22, 1864. Attack on Steamer "Clara Bell', July 24, 1864 (4 Cos.). Expedition from Natchez to Gillespie's Plantation, La., August 4-6, 1864. Concordia Bayou August 5. Expedition from Natchez to Buck's Ferry and skirmish September 19-22, 1864. Expedition from Natchez to Waterproof and Sicily Island September 26-30, 1864. Expedition from Natchez to Homichitto River October 5-8, 1864. Expedition from Vidalia to York Plantation, La., October 26-27, 1864. Skirmish at Black River October 31 and November 1, 1864. Mustered out May 18, 1866.

7th Regiment Heavy Artillery

Organized from 1st Alabama Siege Artillery (African Descent). Designated 6th Heavy Artillery March 11, 1864, and 7th Heavy Artillery April 26, 1864. Attached to District of Memphis, Tenn., 16th Corps, Dept. of Tennessee, to June, 1864. Memphis, Tenn., District of West Tennessee, to January, 1865.

SERVICE.--Garrison duty at Fort Pickering and in Defenses of Memphis, Tenn., until January, 1865. Companies "A," "B," "C" and "D" garrison at Fort Pillow, Tenn., and in massacre April 12, 1864. Skirmish at Pulaski May 18. Holly Springs, Miss., August 28, 1864. Designated 11th United States Colored Troops (New) January 23, 1865.

 

8th Regiment Heavy Artillery

Organized at Paducah, Ky., April 26, 1864. Attached to Paducah, Ky., District of Columbus, Ky., 16th Corps, Dept. of the Tennessee, to August, 1864. Paducah, Ky., District of Columbus, Ky., Dept. of the Ohio, to February, 1865, and Dept. of Kentucky to February, 1866.

SERVICE.--Garrison duty at Paducah, Ky., until February, 1866. Operations against Forest in Kentucky March 16 to April 14, 1864. Action at Fort Anderson, Paducah, Ky., March 25, 1864. Expedition from Paducah, Ky., to Haddix Ferry July 26-27, 1864. Skirmish near Haddix Ferry August 27, 1864. Mustered out February 10, 1866.

9th Regiment Heavy Artillery

Organized at Clarksville and Nashville, Tenn., October 8 to November 1, 1864. Attached to District of Nashville, Dept. of the Cumberland, until May, 1865. Broken up May 5, 1865.

10th Regiment Heavy Artillery

Organized from 1st Corps de Afrique Heavy Artillery. Designated 7th Regiment Heavy Artillery April 4, 1864, and 10th Regiment Heavy Artillery May 21, 1864. Attached to Defenses of New Orleans, La., Dept. of the Gulf, to October, 1864. 1st Brigade, 3rd Division, United States Colored Troops, Dept. of the Gulf, to November, 1864. Defenses of New Orleans, La., to February, 1867. Expedition to Lake Verret, Grand Bayou, and the Park April 2-10, 1865 (Co. "G").

SERVICE.--On garrison duty at New Orleans and in the Dept. of the Gulf entire term. Mustered out February 22, 1867.

11th Regiment Heavy Artillery

Organized from 14th Rhode Island Colored Heavy Artillery. Designated 8th Heavy Artillery April 4, 1864, and 11th Heavy Artillery May 21, 1864. Attached to Defenses of New Orleans, La., Dept. of the Gulf, to October, 1865.

SERVICE.--Garrison duty at New Orleans and other points in the Defenses of that city until October, 1865 (see 14th Rhode Island Colored Heavy Artillery). Mustered out October 2, 1865.

12th Regiment Heavy Artillery

Organized at Camp Nelson, Ky., July 15, 1864. Attached to 2nd Brigade, 1st Division, District of Kentucky, Dept. of the Ohio, to January, 1865. Military District of Kentucky and Dept. of Kentucky, to April, 1866.

SERVICE.--Garrison duty in District of Kentucky, at Bowling Green, Camp Nelson and other points until April, 1866. Mustered out April 24, 1866.

13th Regiment Heavy Artillery

Organized at Camp Nelson, Ky., June 23, 1864. Attached to Military District of Kentucky, Dept. of the Ohio, to February, 1865, and to Dept. of Kentucky, to November, 1865.

SERVICE.--Garrison duty at Camp Nelson, Smithland, Lexington and other points in Kentucky until November-1865. Mustered out November 18, 1865.

14th Regiment Heavy Artillery

Organized at New Berne and Morehead City, N. C., from 1st North Carolina Colored Heavy Artillery March 17, 1864. Attached to Defenses of New Berne, N. C., Dept. of Virginia and North Carolina, to January, 1865. Sub-District of New Berne, Dept. of North Carolina, and Sub-District of Beaufort, N. C., Dept. of North Carolina, to December, 1865.

SERVICE.--Garrison duty at New Berne and other points in the Dept. of North Carolina until December, 1865. Mustered out December 11, 1865.

2nd Regiment Light Artillery

Battery "A", 2nd Regiment Light Artillery

Organized at Nashville, Tenn., April 30, 1864. Attached to Post and District of Nashville, Tenn., Dept. of the Cumberland, to March, 1865. District of Middle Tennessee, Dept. of the Cumberland, to January, 1866.

SERVICE.--Garrison duty at Nashville, Tenn., and in Middle Tennessee, until January, 1866. Battle of Nashville December 15-16, 1864. Mustered out January 13, 1866.

Battery "B", 2nd Regiment Light Artillery

Organized at Fort Monroe, Va., January 8, 1864. Attached to Fort Monroe, Va., Dept. of Virginia and North Carolina, to April, 1864. Artillery, Hincks' Colored Division, 18th Corps, Army of the James, to May, 1864. Rand's Provisional Brigade, 18th Corps, to June, 1864. Artillery Brigade, 18th Corps, June, 1864. Unattached Artillery, Dept. of Virginia and North Carolina, to July, 1864. Defenses of Norfolk and Portsmouth, Va., Dept. of Virginia and North Carolina, to May, 1865. Artillery 25th Corps and Dept. of Texas to March, 1866.

SERVICE.--Duty at Fort Monroe, Va., until April, 1864. Butler's operations south of James River and against Petersburg and Richmond, Va., May 4 to June 15, 1864. Action at Wilson's Wharf May 24. Petersburg, Va., June 9. Before Petersburg June 15-18. Siege operations against Petersburg and Richmond until July 7. Ordered to Portsmouth, Va., July 7, and duty there until May, 1865. Ordered to Texas May, 1865, and duty on the Rio Grande until March, 1866. Mustered out March 17, 1866.

Battery "C", 2nd Regiment Light Artillery

Organized from 1st Louisiana Battery, African Descent. Designated Battery "A" March 11, 1864, and Battery "C" April 26, 1864. Attached to Post of Goodrich Landing, District of Vicksburg, Miss., to May, 1864. Post of Vicksburg, Miss., to July, 1864. Post of Milliken's Bend, La., District of Vicksburg, Miss., to December, 1864. Reserve Artillery, Post of Vicksburg, District of Vicksburg, Miss., to December, 1865.

SERVICE.--Post and garrison duty at Goodrich Landing, Vicksburg, and Milliken's Bend and in the Dept. of Mississippi until December, 1865. Mustered out December 28, 1865.

Battery "D", 2nd Regiment Light Artillery

Organized from 2nd Louisiana Battery, African Descent. Designated Battery "B" March 11, 1864, and Battery "D" April 26, 1864. Attached to Post of Goodrich Landing, Dist. of Vicksburg, Miss., to December, 1864. Reserve Artillery, District of Vicksburg, Dept. of Mississippi, to December, 1865.

SERVICE.--Post and garrison duty at Goodrich Landing until December, 1864, and at Vicksburg, Miss., and in the Dept. of Mississippi until December, 1865. Mustered out December 28, 1865.

Battery "E", 2nd Regiment Light Artillery

Organized from 3rd Battery Louisiana Artillery, African Descent. Designated Battery "C" March 11, 1864, and Battery "E" April 26, 1864. Attached to District of Eastern Arkansas, 7th Corps, Dept. of Arkansas, to September, 1865.

SERVICE.--Post and garrison duty at Helena, Ark., till muster out. Operations in Arkansas July 1-31, 1864. Action at Wallace's Ferry, Big Creek, July 26. Operations in Eastern Arkansas August 1-5, 1864. Lamb's Plantation, near Helena, August 1. Expedition from Helena to Kent's Landing August 11-14 (Detachment). Expedition up White River August 29-September 2, 1864. Mustered out September 26, 1865.

Battery "F", 2nd Regiment Light Artillery

Organized from Memphis Light Battery, African Descent. Designated Battery "D" March 11, 1864, and Battery "F" April 26, 1864. Attached to 1st Colored Brigade, District of Memphis, Tenn., 16th Corps, Dept. of the Tennessee, to June, 1864. 3rd Brigade, Sturgis' Expedition, June, 1864. Post and Defenses of Memphis, Tenn., District of West Tennessee, to December, 1864. Artillery Reserve, District of West Tennessee, to April, 1865. Organized at Hilton Head, S.C., May 24, 1864. Attached to District of Hilton Head, S.C., Dept. of the South, to August, 1864. District of Beaufort, S.C., Dept. of the South, to October, 1864. 2nd Separate Brigade, Dept. of the South, to June, 1865. Dept. of the South, to August, 1865.

SERVICE.---Post and garrison duty at Hilton Head and Beaufort, S.C., entire term. Mustered out August 12, 1865.

Battery "H", 2nd Regiment Light Artillery

Organized from 1st Arkansas Battery, African Descent, December 13, 1864. Attached to Post of Pine Bluff, Ark., 7th Corps, Dept. of Arkansas, to September, 1865.

SERVICE.--Garrison duty at Pine Bluff, Ark., entire term. Expedition to Mount Elba, Ark., and skirmish at Saline River, January 22-February 4, 1865. Mustered out September 15, 1865.

Battery "I", 2nd Regiment Light Artillery

Organized at Memphis, Tenn., April 19, 1864. Attached to District of Memphis, Tenn., 16th Corps, Dept. of the Tennessee, to June, 1864. Colored Brigade, District of Memphis, Tenn. District of West Tennessee to December, 1864. Artillery Reserve, District of West Tennessee, Dept. of the Cumberland, to January, 1866.

SERVICE.--Post and garrison duty at Memphis, Tenn., until April, 1865. Smith's Expedition to Tupelo, Miss., July 5-21. Battle of Tupelo July 14-15. Smith's Expedition to Oxford, Miss., August 1-30. Duty at Memphis and in District of West Tennessee until January, 1866. Mustered out January 10, 1866.

Independent Battery

Organized at Leavenworth, Kan., December 23, 1864. Attached to District of North Kansas, Dept. of Kansas, to July, 1865.
