1st Regiment Cavalry

Organized May 31, 1862, by consolidation of the 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th Regiments of New Mexico Infantry. Attached to Dept. of New Mexico, and engaged in operations against Indians in New Mexico and Arizona, and on garrison duty by detachments, at Forts Stanton, Goodwin, McRae, Wingate, Craig, Canby, Sumner, Marcy, Bascom, Union, and other points in that Department, during entire term of service.

Skirmishes at Jornado Del Muerta June 16, 1863. Warm Springs, Fort McRae, June 20. Operations against Navajo Indians July 7-August 19. Rio Hondo July 18. Concha's Springs July 29 (1 Co.). Pueblo, Colorado, August 18 (3 Cos.). Scout from Fort Wingate to Jacob's Wells, Ojo Redondo, September 15-October 5. Riconde Mascaras December 11. Expedition against Navajo Indians January 6-21, 1864. Operations in New Mexico and Arizona February 1-March 7. Expedition from Fort Wingate to Gila and St. Francis Rivers May 27-July 13 (Cos. "B," "F"). Skirmishes on San Carlos River June 7 and 8 (Cos. "B," "F"). Scouts from Fort Sumner August 3-November 4 (Co. "L"). Skirmish Sacramento Mountains August 25 (Co. "L"). Expedition from Fort Craig to Fort Goodwin, Arizona, October 1-November 27 (Detachment). Scout in the Sacramento Mountains October 13-21 (Cos. "A," "L"). Expedition from Fort Wingate against Indians November 23-December 20. Engagement at St. Vrain's Old Fort, Adobe Fort on Canadian River, November 25. Skirmish Red River December 1. Hassayampa Creek December 15 (Co. "K"). Expedition against Indians in Central Arizona and skirmish at Sycamore Springs, Arizona, December 26, 1864-January 1, 1865. Expedition from Fort Wingate to Sierra Del Datil January 2-10, 1865. Scout from Fort Wingate to Sierra Del Datil January 11-21 (Detachment). Scout from Fort Sumner March 15-21. Scout from Fort Stanton April 12-25 (Cos. "A," "H"). Regiment mustered out September 30, 1866.

1st Battalion Cavalry and Infantry

Organized from 1st Cavalry August 31, 1866. Duty in the Department of New Mexico and Arizona until November, 1867. Mustered out November 23, 1867.

Mink's Independent Cavalry Company

Organized at Santa Fe, N.M., July 20, 1861. Duty at Fort Craig, N.M., until October. Skirmish at Canada Alamosa September 25, 1861, and at Alamosa near Fort Craig October 4. Mustered out October 29, 1861.

Graydon's Independent Cavalry Company

Organized at Fort Craig, N.M., and duty there until January, 1862. Mustered out January 29, 1862.

Graydon's Independent Cavalry Company - Reorganized

Organized at Fort Craig, N.M., February 9, 1862. Action at Valverde, N.M., February 21. Duty at Fort Craig until April. Pursuit of Confederate forces April 13-22. Action at Albuquerque April 8. Mustered out April 29, 1862.

Haspell's Independent Cavalry Company

Organized at Albuqurque, N.M., July 23, 1861. Duty about Fort Craig until October. Skirmishes at Fort Craig August 23 and September 26. Mustered out October 30, 1861.

Vidal's Independent Cavalry Company

Organized at Santa Fe, N.M., July 12, 1861. Duty at Fort Craig, N.M., until October. Mustered out October 12, 1861.

 

1st Regiment Infantry

Organized at Fort Union and Santa Fe, N.M., July 1 to August 13, 1861. Duty at Fort Union until February, 1862. Action at Valverde, N.M., February 21. Pursuit of Confederate forces April 13-22. Duty in Central Northern and Santa Fe Districts until May, 1862. Consolidated with 2nd Infantry, to form 1st New Mexico Cavalry May 31, 1862.

1st Regiment Infantry - Reorganized

Organized October 1, 1863. Attached to Department of New Mexico and on garrison duty by detachments at Forts Union, Selden, Craig, Bowie, Cummings. McRae, Goodwin and other points in that Department during entire term of service. (Co. "K" at Fort Lyon, Colo., September, 1864, to February, 1865.) Expedition from Fort Craig, N.M., to Fort Goodwin, Ariz., May 16 to August 2, 1864 (Co. "I"). Expedition to Pinal Mountains July 18-August 17, 1864 (Detachment Co. "I"). Expedition to Pinal Creek August 1-5, 1864. Expedition from Fort Craig to Fort Goodwin, Ariz., October 1-November 27, 1864. Mustered out November 7, 1866.

1st Regiment Militia Infantry

Organized in New Mexico at large November, 1861. Mustered out February, 1862.

2nd Regiment Infantry

Organized at Santa Fe., N.M., July and August, 1861. Attached to Dept. of Mexico. Duty at Fort Craig, N.M., until February, 1862. Action at Valverde, N.M., February 21, 1862. Pursuit of Confederate forces April 13-22. Action at Peralta April 15, and at Socorro April 25. Duty in Central, Northern and Santa Fe Districts until May. Consolidated with 1st New Mexico Infantry to form 1st New Mexico Cavalry May 31, 1862.

3rd Regiment Infantry (Mounted)

Organized at Fort Union and Albuquerque, N.M., August 30-October 10, 1861. Duty at Fort Union until February, 1862. Action at Valverde, N.M., February 21. Pursuit of Confederate forces April 13-22. Duty in Central, Northern and Santa Fe Districts until May. Mustered out May 31, 1862.

4th Regiment Infantry

Organized at Fort Union, N.M., September, 1861. Duty at Fort Union until February, 1862. Action at Valverde February 21. Engagement at Glorietta or Pigeon Ranch March 28. Pursuit of Confederate forces April 13-22. Duty in Central, Northern and Santa Fe Districts until May. Mustered out May 31, 1862.

5th Regiment Infantry

Organized at Albuquerque, N.M., November, 1861. Duty at Albuquerque until February, 1862. Action at Valverde February 21. Engagement at Glorietta or Pigeon Ranch March 28. Duty in Central, Northern and Santa Fe Districts until May, 1862. Mustered out May 31, 1862.

Perea's Battalion Militia

Organized at large November and December, 1861, for the defense of New Mexico. Mustered out February 28, 1862.

Alarid's Independent Company Militia

Organized at Santa Fe, N.M., December 10, 1861, for the defense of New Mexico. Mustered out February 28, 1862.

Gonzales' Independent Company Militia

Organized at Fort Craig, N.M., November 23, 1861, for the defense of New Mexico. Mustered out February 28, 1862.

Mora Independent Company Militia

Organized at Mora, N.M., November 14, 1861, for the defense of New Mexico. Mustered out February 28, 1862.

Tafolla's Independent Company Militia

Organized at Fort Craig, N.M., November 20, 1861, for the defense of New Mexico. Mustered out February 28, 1862.
